This is a grand historical and very in-depth novel. I am a
huge history buff, and so when taking history and culture into the subject
matter it's an instant winner for me. I love learning about the olden days of
yesteryear and the reality of a group of people who strive to live their lives
even though a bigoted and hateful world put them down.
I had no real knowledge of the Gay New York of the 1890's to
1940's and so I learned a lot of useful, and very informative information.
George Chauncey gives a great description and atmosphere to the period. His
descriptive word play places you there and gives you everything that needs to
be said in detail.
I highly recommend this book for history buffs, culture
buffs, and I feel this is a pivotal book for Gay culture to learn of the gay
movement, and the history of those of the past that made away for those of the
present.
I feel Chauncey is a vast array of historical knowledge, and
that knowledge transcended on the page, and off the page into the mind of this
reader, I learned, I was educated, and I was thoroughly entertained.
Would I return to it Again: Absolutely in a heartbeat? Great
informative book.
Would I Recommend: Again, absolutely to all history buffs,
gay culture, and as a teaching tool.
